Getting this wrong in either direction — underpowered or badly matched — is one of the most common reasons a commercial audio system sounds weak or unreliable. Here's how the matching actually works.
An amplifier that's underpowered for its speaker load has to work harder to reach the same volume, which distorts the sound and can damage the amplifier or speakers over time.
